I was just reminiscing the other day with a friend about our third period Humanities class back in our last year of high school. We considered each other to be cultivated enough individuals and we thought it would be great to take a class that involved different aspects of philosophy, literature, history, religion, art and music.
The first day of class we were surprised that we would have two instructors in the course. One was a crazy orchestra conductor sort and the other taught us the literature and history aspect, which from day one we should have kept track of how many times the phrase “Greco / Roman period” was uttered from her mouth. Our teachers were so impassioned by humanities that they were less hard on grading than they were about our learning experience.
Our class took turns between sitting in an art room and the choir room, depending on what we were learning about that day. And, oh, how they wanted us to read. They passed out stacks upon stacks of photocopied book pages, which was probably about the height of three or four thick textbooks. As the year progressed we received more photocopied handouts and in total students probably had to read the equivalent of seventy-five books for the year. I swear I’m not exaggerating.
We watched glorified slideshows of statues and artwork thousands years old. We read Dante’s Inferno and argued endlessly about the circles and cantos. We squinted during Donizetti’s Don Pasquale from the nosebleed section of the Lyric Opera House. I enjoyed hearing a frenetic piano at a symphony matinee where I was stuck sitting next to a ninety-four year old woman who was quite certain that she did not enjoy the frenetic noises. The class read E.M. Forrester’s A Passage to India while I didn’t read a word of the damned thing and still haven’t, in fact. Perhaps I would have, had I realized that the test on the book would be entirely filled with essay questions.
We went on a “houses of worship” tour of Chicago where we visited the Holy Name Cathedral, a synagogue and a small Buddhist temple where I’m sure my class expected to see some little old Tibetan man shuffling around but instead were greeted by a middle aged Caucasian mechanic. I’m guessing the temple probably thought that teenagers may be more comfortable with someone a little more outspoken than a monk. The last stop on the road to religion was the Baha’i House of Worship, a beautiful building in Wilmette, which took thirty-three years to construct. I had driven past the building many times but had never been inside and was shocked to find that the majestic dwelling inside housed row upon row of bright orange seventies-style chairs.
My most embarrassing moment in Humanities came on a train ride back from a field trip in the city when my friend and I were sitting on the Metra across from our teacher who told me that before I joined her class she had remembered me from the previous year’s prom where she had chaperoned and who I had arrived with the none other than the biggest dork on campus.

I have heard of all sorts of crazy treatment plans but VH1s Celebrity Rehab with Doctor Drew sure takes the cake. The fact that reality television has gotten to this point is ridiculous. I do not even know why these so-called celebrities would agree to go on such a show. Why make such a horrible, private thing like rehab public? I think that some of them do genuinely want to get better, and make a change in their life, but if some one them are there because they see this as their last chance to get back into the spotlight then there is a serious problem. I have no idea how the Baldwin brothers allowed Daniel to be on that show, what an embarrassment to their family! I think that the one positive part of this show is the effect that it can have on others with addiction problems. If people are able to see what rehab is like, and what other people like them have gone through, then maybe they will be more likely to seek help. Regardless of the actual benefits, some of the unintentional comedy on the show is priceless. The fact that so many people find such a show might say less about our culture than more people are willing to admit.

I’m really tired of wearing glasses, but I’m torn about what to do. I guess I could go to contacts, but they look like just as much of a pain in the rear as glasses, if not more. There seem to be hundreds of places that do Lasik in Colorado, some of which are relatively close to me, but surgery is a little scary to me. It’s not just the cost, which starts at about five hundred bucks per eye, which concerns me – I want to know how I can tell a good place from a bad place. With so many places doing it, they can’t all be the best and I’m not so sure that I want to put my future vision in the hands of a doctor who isn’t the best. I’ve been visiting a lot of websites, most of which have a section for patient testimonials, but how do I know if I can really trust them or not – I don’t think they would put a negative review from one of their patients up on the website for fear that it would hurt the business. Maybe if I personally knew someone that had it done I’d be more likely to believe how the center they visited was, but until I get a good personal recommendation I might just end up keeping the glasses.

I just saw the best music show in my life. These guys should be playing concerts in arena across the whole country. Why has no one heard of Best Home Alarm yet? All right, it’s pretty cool because the name really makes no sense. I mean does Best Home Alarm scream punk rock to you? I didn’t think so. From what I’ve heard, they got the name Best Home Alarm from the fact that everyone in the band used to work in the home security industry. They sold alarms or worked in the office where they sold them at. Actually, they might all still work there since I don’t think they’re playing in the band full-time yet, but they should. Anyway, the lead singer goes back and forth between just thrashing out his voice and hitting a lot of more fluid melodies. The band keeps up with him all the way, going beyond punk rock by throwing in some metal and even hints of alternative music. The drummer was especially important. He just never got tired and set the whole tempo. Obviously, they made me in to a big fan and that was playing in a small, cramped bar. I’d love to see how they do in a big amphitheater with thousands of people screaming their name. “Best Home Alarm!” “Best Home Alarm!”

It was a voice sounding in my head over and over again: install wooden closet organizer. Tara was at me to get it built in our bedroom, and I wanted to get it finished too, but I was just dead tired. I promised myself that I'd do it on Saturday. Saturday came and went, and so did Sunday. On Monday I get a text from Tara. It just asked me to please get it done. I called her. She was sympathetic. She knows I'm putting in close to 70 hours a week to get this art project finished. I've been doing it for six months now. I'd have given anything to have the time to get it finished. So the voice was like programming in my head. I decided to pull and "all nighter" and Tara slept on the couch. She must have been tired, as she slept through all my pounding and noise. Sparky didn't. He was barking. I finally had to put him out of the room. Then he barked louder. Poor thing. I finally took a break and took him for a walk. It was a nice night. I don't take too many walks at three in the morning, but it felt good.
